A quiet spot, soft layers and gentle light: a simple way to make a corner you'll actually want to sit in.
Updated

Start with the right spot
A reading corner doesn't need a spare room or a big budget. It needs one spot that feels a little set apart from the rest of the day. For most homes that means a corner of the living room, the end of a bedroom, a wide landing or the space beside a window. Look for somewhere you can sit for an hour without being in anyone's way.
Natural light is lovely for daytime reading, so a spot near a window is a good start if you have one. Just check for drafts on colder days, and notice where the light falls at different times. If the brightest window is also the busiest part of the room, a quieter corner with a good lamp will often serve you better.
Once you have chosen the spot, sit there for a few minutes before you buy or move anything. Notice what you reach for: somewhere to rest a cup, a blanket for your knees, a little more light over your shoulder. Those small instincts are the real plan for the space.
Build soft layers
Comfort comes from layers rather than one big piece. Start with the seat you already have, whether that's an armchair, a corner of the sofa or a floor cushion, and build from there. A cushion behind your lower back, another to tuck under an elbow and a throw within reach will change how long you want to stay.
A plush throw is the simplest upgrade. We like the cream striped fuzzy plush throw in this edit for its soft, fuzzy ribbed texture, which makes a neutral bed or sofa feel instantly cozy. A neutral, textured throw also tends to sit well with whatever is already in the room, so it won't fight with your cushions or your books.
If you're always the one reaching for a blanket, a wearable layer can be even easier. The Beautyrest wearable electric poncho wrap is made of soft sherpa and berber fleece, with three heat settings and a two-hour auto shut-off. It suits sofa nights with a book, because you can turn pages without a blanket sliding off your shoulders. As with any electric item, follow the manufacturer's instructions for use and care.
Choose warm, low light
Good reading light and cozy light are not quite the same thing, and the nicest corners have both. You need a focused source for the page, such as a floor lamp or a small table lamp placed slightly behind and to one side of you. Then add softer light around the edges, so the corner feels calm rather than spotlit.
Warm-toned bulbs make a space feel more relaxed in the evening, and a lamp with a low setting lets you shift the mood as the night goes on. Try to avoid harsh overhead light while you read; it flattens the room and makes everything feel more like a waiting area than a retreat.
For the soft, glowing layer, flameless candles are a simple choice. The flickering LED flameless candles in this edit give a warm, flickering candlelit glow in smoky glass with no open flame, and come with a remote and timer, so you can set them on a shelf and let them be. If you like a little more atmosphere for a film after your chapter, the Hekation water wave projector light washes your walls in slow, rippling color, with a remote and timer of its own.
Add a small surface
Every reading corner needs somewhere to put things down. A small side table, a stool, a wide windowsill or a sturdy tray will do. It should be close enough to reach without leaning, and large enough for a cup, the book you're reading and perhaps your glasses.
Keep a coaster there so a warm drink never becomes a worry, and add a small dish or basket for the bits that tend to collect: a bookmark, a pencil, lip balm, a remote. Giving them a home keeps them off the floor and out of the cushions.
Keep it uncluttered
The fastest way to lose a cozy corner is to let it become storage. Keep only what you use in that spot within arm's reach: the current book, one or two waiting next in line, a throw and a light. Everything else can live on a shelf somewhere else.
A quick reset at the end of the evening helps more than any big tidy. Fold the throw, take the cup back to the kitchen, switch off the lights and leave the book where you'll find it tomorrow. Two minutes is enough, and the corner will be ready the next time you sit down.
Finally, give yourself permission to use it. A reading corner works best as a small habit: ten pages with a morning coffee, a chapter before bed, or a quiet half hour on a slow weekend. The pieces below are simply there to make that habit a little warmer. Prices and availability change, so check the current price at the retailer before you buy.
