Cool down, drink some water and give your body a calm hour: a simple routine for the time after exercise.
Updated

Why the hour after matters
Most of us put plenty of thought into the workout itself and very little into what comes next. Yet the hour after exercise is when your heart rate settles, your breathing slows and your body starts to recover. A calm, simple routine for that time can help you feel more comfortable for the rest of the day and sleep better at night.
A short note before you begin: this is general advice, not medical guidance. If you are injured, have a health condition or are unsure what is right for your body, ask a doctor or another qualified professional first.
Start with a cool-down
Instead of stopping suddenly, ease out of your workout. A few minutes of slow walking, gentle cycling or easy movement lets your heart rate come down gradually. Breathe slowly through your nose and let your shoulders drop. This is a good moment to notice how your body feels before you move on.
Drink some water
You lose water when you sweat, so have a glass or bottle ready for when you finish. Sip steadily rather than drinking a large amount all at once. If you worked out for a long time or in a warm room, keep drinking little and often over the next hour or so.
A small snack or a meal within a reasonable time after exercise also helps you feel steady. Keep it simple: something you enjoy and that sits well with you.
Take a warm bath or shower
Warm water is one of the simplest ways to relax after exercise. Once your breathing has settled, take a warm shower or run a bath that is comfortably warm rather than very hot. Take your time, let the warmth soften tight shoulders and use the moment to slow down.
If you like a long soak, a bath pillow can make it far more comfortable. The 3D mesh spa bath pillow in this edit uses breathable 3D mesh to cradle your head, neck and shoulders, and six suction cups keep it in place, which suits long soaks and spa nights at home. Keep water within reach, and get out slowly if you start to feel lightheaded.
Stretch lightly
Light stretching once you are warm can feel lovely. Keep it gentle and slow, and never push into pain. A few easy options: reach your arms overhead and lean softly to each side, fold forward with soft knees, hold a gentle calf stretch against a wall and roll your shoulders backward a few times.
Breathe out as you ease into each stretch and hold for a few slow breaths. If a stretch hurts or a joint feels wrong, stop.
A little extra help
Some people like to add a massage tool to their wind-down. The mini portable muscle massage gun in this edit is compact enough for a bathroom shelf, with interchangeable heads for legs, back and shoulders, and suits an at-home recovery and wind-down routine.
If you use one, follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. Start on a low setting, use light pressure, keep it moving and avoid bony areas, joints, the neck and anywhere that feels sore or bruised. If you are injured or have a health condition, ask a doctor before using a massage device.
Rest well
Rest is part of the routine, not a break from it. Change into something comfortable, sit somewhere quiet for a few minutes and let your body settle. On evening workouts, try to keep the rest of the night calm, with low light and fewer screens, so you can fall asleep easily.
Sleep is when much of your recovery happens, so give yourself a full night when you can. Some days your wind-down will be a long bath and slow stretches; other days it might be a glass of water and five quiet minutes. Both count. Prices and availability change, so check the current price at the retailer before you buy.
