Layers, a warm drink and fewer drafts: small, practical ways to stay comfortable when the workday is cold.

Why a cold desk is so distracting
It's hard to concentrate when your hands are chilly and your feet are cold. Sitting still for long stretches means your body makes less heat than it would if you were moving, so a room that feels fine when you walk in can feel cold an hour into a focused task. The good news is that a few small changes usually help more than heating the whole house.
Dress in layers
Layers trap warm air and let you adjust through the day. A thin base layer, a soft sweater or cardigan and a pair of warm socks will do more than one heavy top. Fingerless gloves are worth a try if your hands get cold on the keyboard.
For sitting still at a desk, a wearable wrap can be easier than a blanket that keeps slipping off your lap. The Beautyrest wearable electric poncho wrap is made of soft sherpa and berber fleece, with three heat settings and a two-hour auto shut-off, and it's a good match for anyone who's always cold. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for use and care.
Keep a warm drink close
A warm drink does double duty: it warms your hands and gives you a natural reason to pause. A lidded mug or an insulated cup stays warm for longer, and a coaster protects the desk. Alternate coffee or tea with warm water or herbal tea so you stay hydrated through the afternoon.
Block the drafts
Drafts are often the real reason a desk feels cold. Notice where the chill is coming from: a window frame, the gap under a door, a bare floor. A draft stopper along the bottom of a door, heavier curtains drawn as it gets dark, or moving the desk a little away from an outside wall can make a noticeable difference.
If you can, set your desk so you face into the room rather than sitting with your back to a cold window. You keep daylight on your work while staying out of the coldest air.
Put a rug underfoot
Cold floors pull warmth from your feet faster than you might expect, especially tile, stone or bare wood. A rug under your desk and chair adds a layer between you and the floor, makes the space feel more finished and softens noise in the room. Choose a low pile so your chair still rolls easily, or add a chair mat on top.
A small footrest or a firm cushion keeps your feet up off the coldest part of the room, which helps on very chilly days.
Warm the space you use
Warming just the area around your desk can be more comfortable than heating rooms you aren't using. The Electactic portable ceramic space heater with thermostat is compact enough for a desk or nightstand, with an adjustable thermostat and tip-over protection, and it suits chilly mornings at your desk and in bedrooms.
A short safety note for any portable heater: follow the manufacturer's instructions, keep it clear of fabrics, paper and curtains, stand it on a stable surface where it can't be knocked, and never leave it running unattended. Switch it off when you leave the room, and always before you go to sleep.
Move a little, often
Short movement breaks are one of the simplest ways to warm up. Every hour or so, stand up, stretch, walk to the kitchen to refill your drink, or do a few slow squats or calf raises. A few minutes is enough to get your blood moving and to reset your focus when you sit back down.
These breaks help concentration too. Stepping away gives your eyes a rest from the screen and often makes the next task easier to start. A gentle timer can help if you tend to lose track of the hours.
Bring it together
A warm, focused desk comes down to small habits: layers you can adjust, a warm drink within reach, fewer drafts, something soft underfoot and a reason to get up now and then. Add a little targeted warmth where it helps, and keep safety in mind. Prices and availability change, so check the current price at the retailer before you buy.
