One zone at a time, a donate box and ten minutes a day: a gentle way to get the house ready before the busy season begins.

Why a reset helps
The weeks before the holidays tend to fill up quickly, with decorations, visitors, extra cooking and a steady flow of packages. A home that is already a little lighter handles all of that with far less stress. A calm reset now, done in small steps, means you spend the season enjoying your space rather than fighting it.
The aim is not a perfect house. It's a home where everyday things have a place, surfaces are clear enough to use and there is room for the extras the season brings.
Declutter one zone at a time
Trying to sort the whole house in a weekend usually ends with every room half done. Instead, pick one small zone at a time: a single drawer, one shelf, the coat hooks or the top of the fridge. Finish it completely before you move on. Small wins build momentum, and each finished zone stays finished.
For each item, ask a simple question: is this used regularly, or is it truly loved? If neither is true, it can probably go. Keep a bag for rubbish and recycling nearby so nothing ends up back on the shelf.
Start at the door
The entryway is the first thing you and your guests see, and it collects clutter fast. Clear the floor of extra shoes, hang coats that are in use and put away the ones that aren't. Give keys, bags and mail a clear home, such as a hook, a basket or a small tray.
A clear entryway also makes room for wet boots, extra coats and packages during the busy weeks ahead. If you have a mat, give it a shake or a wash so the house feels fresh from the first step inside.
Clear the surfaces
Kitchen counters, dining tables and side tables are where the season happens: baking, wrapping, serving and gathering. Clear them back to the essentials. Put appliances you rarely use into a cupboard, move paperwork to one folder and find homes for the small things that have drifted there over the year.
Keep a donate box
Place a sturdy box somewhere easy to reach and drop in anything in good condition that you no longer need: clothes that don't fit, duplicate kitchen tools, toys that have been outgrown, books you won't read again. When the box is full, take it to a donation point straight away rather than letting it sit by the door.
Make space for decorations and guests
Think ahead about where decorations will go and clear those spots before the boxes come out. If guests are staying, empty a drawer, free a few hangers and clear a corner for a suitcase. A little space prepared in advance makes visitors feel expected and welcome.
Store decorations in labeled boxes
When the decorations come out, take a moment to sort them. Keep what you love, let go of anything broken or never used, and group the rest by room or by type. Sturdy boxes with clear labels on two sides save a lot of searching later, and the same boxes make packing up after the holidays quick and calm.
Keep it going with a 10-minute tidy
Once the reset is done, a short daily tidy keeps it that way. Set a timer for ten minutes each evening and put things back where they belong: shoes to the rack, dishes to the kitchen, cushions on the sofa, papers to their folder. Ten minutes is short enough to do even on a busy day, and it stops clutter from building up again.
The finishing touch
With the house clear and calm, a little warm light is the perfect last step. The flickering LED flameless candles in this edit give a warm, flickering candlelit glow in smoky glass with no open flame, and suit shelves and dinner tables. For the front window, the JUSTPRO lighted window silhouettes, a Santa and reindeer 2-pack, use warm white mini lights; you just hang them and plug them in.
